  15. Quick checklist

For most US service businesses, the phone rings because someone searched "plumber near me", "AC repair" or "dentist open Saturday" and saw your name in the map results. Those three or four map listings get a large share of attention, and the businesses in them aren't always the biggest. They're usually the ones with the most complete, consistent and trusted local presence.

Use this checklist to tighten every part of yours.

1. Set up your Google Business Profile correctly

Claim or create your profile and complete verification. Then decide your business type honestly:

  • Storefront: customers visit your location (clinics, salons, shops). Show your address.
  • Service-area business: you travel to customers (plumbing, cleaning, roofing). Hide your address and list the cities, counties or ZIP codes you serve.
  • Hybrid: you do both. Show the address and add service areas.

Don't use a virtual office or mailbox address to appear in a city where you have no real presence. It violates guidelines and is a common reason for suspensions.

2. Nail your categories and services

Choose the most specific primary category ("Plumber", "HVAC contractor", "Roofing contractor"), then add secondary categories for genuine services ("Water heater installation service", "Air duct cleaning service"). Fill in the services list with clear descriptions. Customers and Google both use these to judge relevance.

3. Use your real business name

Keyword-stuffed names like "Joe's Plumbing – Best Emergency Plumber Austin TX" may seem to help briefly, but they break guidelines and invite edits or suspensions. Use the name on your licence, vehicles and invoices.

4. Complete every detail customers need

  • Hours, including emergency or 24/7 availability if you genuinely offer it.
  • A local phone number that's answered (tracking numbers can work if set up correctly with your main number as an additional number).
  • A description that explains your services, areas and what makes you different.
  • Attributes such as online estimates, veteran-owned or women-owned where true.
  • Booking or quote links if you use them.

5. Add photos and keep them coming

Upload photos of your team, vehicles, equipment and completed work (with customer permission). Before-and-after photos work especially well for trades. Real images make your listing more trustworthy than competitors using stock photography.

6. Build a review engine

Reviews are one of the strongest local signals and a major factor in who gets the call. Make asking automatic: send a text or email with your direct review link when a job is completed. Train technicians to mention it on site. Reply to every review, thanking happy customers by referencing the job and responding calmly and helpfully to complaints.

Don't gate reviews (only asking happy customers through a filter), buy them or offer incentives. These practices conflict with Google's and FTC rules on fake and incentivised reviews.

7. Claim the listings that matter in the US

Consistency of your name, address and phone number (NAP) across the web supports trust. Prioritise:

  • Apple Business Connect (Apple Maps and Siri)
  • Bing Places for Business
  • Yelp
  • Better Business Bureau
  • Facebook business page
  • Nextdoor business page
  • Industry platforms relevant to you, such as Angi, Houzz, Thumbtack or healthcare directories
  • Your local Chamber of Commerce

Search for old addresses or phone numbers and correct outdated listings.

8. Build a service page for each core service

A single "Services" page listing everything rarely ranks well. Create a dedicated page for each main service, such as water heater repair, drain cleaning or sewer line replacement, explaining what's involved, typical signs you need it, how pricing works (even if only factors rather than numbers), and a clear call to action.

9. Create genuine city or area pages

If you serve multiple cities, create pages for the main areas you cover. Make them useful: services most requested there, local considerations (older housing stock, climate, permits), photos of jobs in that area and testimonials from local customers. Avoid publishing dozens of near-identical pages that only change the city name.

10. Make your website convert mobile visitors

Most local searches happen on phones. Your site should load quickly, show your phone number prominently, use a sticky click-to-call button, and keep quote forms short. If you offer emergency service, say so above the fold.

11. Add LocalBusiness schema

Mark up your homepage or location pages with LocalBusiness schema (or a specific subtype such as Plumber, HVACBusiness or Dentist), including name, address or service area, phone, hours and links to your profiles. Keep it consistent with your GBP.

Sponsor a youth sports team, join trade associations, partner with complementary businesses (realtors, property managers, home builders), contribute expert tips to local news, and get listed by suppliers or manufacturers you're certified with. Local links are often easier to earn than national ones and highly relevant.

13. Consider Local Services Ads alongside SEO

In many US service categories, Google shows Local Services Ads with a "Google Screened" or "Google Guaranteed" badge above the map. These are paid and pay-per-lead, separate from SEO, but they can complement organic visibility while your rankings grow.

14. Track calls, not just rankings

Rankings change by searcher location and are only part of the picture. Track:

  • Calls, website clicks and direction requests in GBP performance.
  • Form submissions and click-to-call events in GA4.
  • UTM-tagged traffic from your GBP website link.
  • Booked jobs by source in your CRM or job management software.

Quick checklist

  • GBP verified with the correct business type and service areas.
  • Accurate name, specific categories and full services list.
  • Complete hours, phone, description and attributes.
  • Real photos uploaded regularly.
  • Automated, compliant review requests and replies to every review.
  • Apple, Bing, Yelp, BBB, Facebook, Nextdoor and industry listings consistent.
  • Dedicated service pages and genuine city pages.
  • Fast, mobile-first site with click-to-call.
  • LocalBusiness schema and local links.
  • Calls and booked jobs tracked by source.

Work through these steps in order and keep them maintained. Local SEO rewards consistency more than cleverness, and most service businesses in any given town still leave several of these undone.
